I have lots of old books falling apart due to pages being torn out all in the name of art.  This is one of my old faithfuls, it has been a great resource for cardmaking.  To keep the rest of it together I have simply used a vintage organza band from an old hat beyond repair and a vintage rhinestone buckle.  Vintage beauty in all its simplicity.  This idea works well with art journals, cards and altered books as well.
